The labor of balancing work and life.

Life is filled with many responsibilities like keeping up with the challenges of work, tending to household chores, or spending quality time with loved ones. Finding a way to balance all those things isn’t easy, but it is essential to leading a happy and fulfilling life. Here are some ways to help you stay balanced:

  • Set your priorities. Think about what is most important to you. Maybe you want to spend more time with family or exercise more. Write down your goals, prioritize them, then work towards achieving them.
  • Look at how you spend your time. What activities take up your time that are not aligned with your goals? Maybe screen or television time could be traded out for time with your family. Think about ways you can reduce the time you spend on things that are unrelated to your goals and make adjustments.
  • Schedule time for yourself. While you have responsibilities to your employer and your loved ones, you also have a responsibility to take care of yourself. Take time to relax and care for yourself, doing whatever it is that makes you happy, including leaving work behind.
  • Set a work schedule. If at all possible, try to start and leave work at the same time each day. When you’re at work, focus on work. When you are outside of work, focus on your personal priorities. This may mean unplugging from work devices, such as phones, tablets or laptops, at a certain time each evening and on the weekends.

While having so many responsibilities at home and work can seem overwhelming, the important thing to remember is that you can control your work/life balance — and your happiness.
