This year’s Independence Day celebration may look a little different, but you can still make it a memorable one. Here are a few ideas to help you enjoy the holiday and maybe even start a new tradition or two of your own.

Play Patriotic Games

Have some fun family competition with Independence Day-inspired games, like stars-and-stripes tic tac toe or a red, white, and blue water balloon toss. Should the weather not allow for outside play, you can always find entertainment inside with board or card games.

Take a Bike Ride

Maybe your neighborhood or community parade has been cancelled this year. No problem. You and your immediate family can have your very own private parade by decorating your bikes with flags, streamers, and ribbons, and riding together for a few casual laps around the block. The ride will help everyone work up an appetite before the celebratory meal.

Enjoy an Outdoor Meal with Family

Gather the family together and make a plan to create the ultimate backyard feast. Get decked out in red, white, and blue, and make patriotic dishes (PDF) that you can enjoy all day long. Add some sing-a-long tunes that include your favorite patriotic songs on the speakers (or by guitar) to really top off the day.

Spark Up the Sparklers

While many communities will not be hosting fireworks displays this year, you can always stock up on sparklers and have your own patriotic light show in your driveway or yard. Just remember to follow recommended precautions to prevent injuries*.

Go Camping in Your Backyard

Can’t make it to a real campsite this year? Try a little backyard tent camping instead. Once your cookout has died down, enjoy the end of the evening by sleeping under the stars.

Whatever your plans are for the holiday, we hope it is a day full of fun, love and laughter!
