Protect Yourself: Tips to Avoid Scams During Recovery

Scammers are known to take advantage of storm victims during the recovery and rebuilding process. Here are some ways to avoid a scam, according to the Federal Trade Commission:

  • Know that FEMA does not charge application fees. If someone wants money to help you qualify for FEMA or other disaster aid, it’s a scam.
  • Don’t rely on a contractor to tell you what’s covered by insurance. Verify your insurance coverage yourself. Never sign your insurance check over to a contractor.
  • Be skeptical of anyone promising immediate clean-up or repairs, especially if they want cash upfront.
  • Check out contractors before you commit to anything by searching for online reviews, confirming their license and insurance, and checking with the local home builder’s association to see if there are complaints against them.
  • Get a written contract and read it carefully.

*Subject to credit approval. Disaster Relief personal loans are unsecured, consumer-purpose loans available to new and existing customers, who reside in Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri or Oklahoma. Loans are limited to balances from $500 to $10,000. No payment due for first 120 days; however, interest accrues during this time. Your loan payment will be calculated based on your interest rate, initial loan amount and 60-month repayment period. For example, a $5,000 loan amount with a 7.75% annual percentage rate (APR) would require 60 monthly payments of $102.08. Auto-debit interest rate discount of 0.25% is available and must be set up at time of loan. Offer valid April 8-May 8, 2025. Offer subject to change. New loans only; refinances or renewals of Arvest loans do not qualify.
