“Juneteenth,” a federal holiday, was signed into legislation in 2021 to recognize June 19 as the date that commemorates the announcement of freedom to the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in Texas, a freedom that was made effective two years prior through the Emancipation Proclamation.
